Many of you may be asking yourselves why I would teach you how to not need me? The answer is kinda simple. I am in the service industry and we are supposed to serve. The first step in carpet cleaning is to remove as much of the carpet load or dry soil from the carpet fibers as possible. What happens to dry dirt when you add water? It becomes mud and mud is a lot harder to get out than sand. A sq. yard of carpet may contain up to 8 lbs. of dry dirt. Now that the carpets are thoroughly vacuumed, we want to prespray or precondition the carpet.

This may be the most important step in the carpet cleaning process and it is often overlooked by the "professional carpet cleaning company." Many Colorado carpet cleaning companies will only precondition the spots they see and not the entire carpet. This is akin to taking very dirty jeans and placing detergent on the ketchup spot and ignoring the general grime that the jeans are covered in. After the jeans dried you would have very dirty jeans with a clean spot where the ketchup used to be. To insure that all the carpet gets as clean as possible we must prespray all the carpets before we clean them. We also want the prespray to sit or dwell in the carpet fibers for at least two to twenty minutes before we clean them. It takes the soap bubbles time to pry the dirt off the carpet fiber. If we heat our preconditioner before we apply it, the preconditioner will be more powerful and effective. Once we reach 118 degrees every 18 degrees hotter will double the ability of the detergent to clean. Make sure that you are heating only detergent and non combustible chemicals. This is one reason why you can never get the carpets as clean with a portable cleaner compared to a high heat truck mount carpet cleaner.

After you prespray a section of carpet you can agitate the carpet with a carpet rake and this will help the detergent break the dirt free from the carpet fiber. You don't want the prespray to dry before you rinse the carpets with your home cleaner. You can use a fresh water rinse or a slightly acidic rinse to flush the detergent and dirt out of the carpet. If you can create airflow and warm air the carpets will dry faster. It is preferred for the carpets to dry within 24 hours. The faster the carpets dry the less wicking or traveling of dirt from the carpets backing will occur. A quick recap:

1. Vacuum carpet thoroughly.

2. Precondition all the carpet to be cleaned

3. Heat the prespray if possible and agitate it into the carpet fibers.

4. Let the preconditioner sit or dwell for 2- 20 minutes

5. Rinse the carpet with fresh water

6. Dry as fast as possible

Responding to the problems associated with the disposal of used carpet, the carpet industry has teamed up with government agencies and other concerned groups to establish a program that encourages the recycling of used carpet materials.

This partnership has implemented a national agreement that sets goals for increasing the amount of carpet that is recycles. One result of this cooperative effort has been the creation of entire industry that is built around the collection and recycling of used carpet materials.

Berber carpet is one of the most durable types of carpet available on the market today. Cleaning Berber is as easy as cleaning any other kind of carpet. Cleaning Berber carpet is not something to procrastinate about; it can't be left just for your annual spring cleaning, it needs to be done the moment it gets dirty. Cleaning this type of carpet regularly is one secret in keeping it looking good for years.

The best way to clean Berber carpets is to keep them from getting dirty in the first place and this can be done by taking your shoes off, vacuuming regularly, placing small mats over high traffic areas to prevent marks in the carpet and cleaning spots or spills when they occur. Berber carpet cleaning should be taken seriously because if you let a stain set into the carpet, it is nearly impossible to remove and you may continue seeing its little mark for years.

Berber carpet is just a looped carpet and the loops are not of the same size, but large and small are woven together, to create a casual textured looped carpet. Not all Berber carpets wear well because, in order to create the casual look, mills add air to the loops, and air does not resist crushing well. Berber carpets hide footprints and vacuum tracks very well. Berber carpets are generally made out of olefin, nylon or wool and cleaning these different types of fabric is where it gets tricky.

Olefin Berber carpet is one of the most inexpensive fibers of Berber carpet that you can find. Olefin fibers resist all stains, except those that are oil-based, which is excellent in homes where children or pets live. Olefin fibers are frequently difficult to clean because of their tenacious affinity for oils. Olefin Berber carpets respond well to steam cleaning but the drawback is that the cleaning solution tends to slide down the fiber shaft into the backing since it does not get absorbed by the carpet. As a result, drying time on olefin Berber is often much longer than nylon cut-pile. If you have olefin Berber it doesn't matter how much you clean it, you are going to be left with stains.

Nylon Berber carpet still dominates the market and always will. Nylon is soil- and mildew-resistant, resilient and non-allergenic. Nylon Berber is moderately priced and holds up well to wear being harder than olefin but it also stains easier than olefin. Nylon is a good choice for all traffic areas because it is durable and maintains fiber height, and resists soiling, staining, and mildew. When a water-based cleaning solution is applied to nylon carpet, some of the solution is absorbed into fibers, while the rest flows toward the backing due to pressure and gravitational forces. Knowing how to clean Berber carpet will help your carpet last longer and you will be more satisfied with it. Because of the nature of nylon Berber you will find a low moisture or drier method of cleaning will get you the best results.

Wool is the only alternative to nylon carpet and holds a small percentage of the market due to cost and lifestyle factors. Wool is one of the most expensive carpet fibers and will last the longest. Wool naturally resists general soiling, crushing, and most stains, it wears well and dirt comes out easily with cleaning but because it retains the most moisture a dry method of cleaning will get the best results. The biggest concern to be aware of when cleaning wool is to ensure the pH level of the cleaning solution is neutral. A high pH solution will ruin wool carpeting slowly, but surely. This is important to know, because not only will a high pH rating ruin wool; but a high pH rating will void most warranties.

As you can see, cleaning Berber carpet is quite different from cleaning regular carpet. With just a little cleaning and maintenance, your quality Berber carpeting will last you for years. If you have your carpets professionally cleaned, or clean them yourself, on a regular basis, making sure that all the excess water is removed from the Berber carpet you will find that your Berber carpets will maintain their beauty and elegance for many years.

Cleaning a wool carpet takes care and attention, in fact just as much care and attention as you would use when washing your real wool garments. Wool is without a doubt the best type of carpet to have in any home, providing many advantages over synthetic alternatives.

Such carpets are not only the most expensive of any kind of carpet you could buy, but as with anything, you also get what you pay for. They have an outstanding natural ability to resist wear and tear, and the ability to resist most stains far better than any synthetic material.

Wool is a luxurious fiber because it is natural, but also because it is soft. However, as with the vast majority of natural fibers, wool has its own particular weaknesses when it comes to cleaning materials, and you have to be careful what you use if you want to maintain your wool carpet properly.

Cleaning a wool carpet is quite different to that of carpets fashioned from synthetic fibers such as nylon, and if you have built up a collection of cleaning solutions for synthetic fiber carpets, you would do well to discard them immediately. Most carpet cleaners will be either too acidic or too alkaline to use on wool. Any cleaning solution for a wool carpet should have a pH value as close to neutral as possible, otherwise it could well cause the wool fabric to break down and dissolve, or at the very least lose its natural softness and become severely discoloured.

The best method of helping to keep a wool carpet clean is to regularly vacuum it, since the wool will resist most stains and dirt for a short while. Whereas with most carpets perhaps weekly vacuuming is perfectly acceptable, wool carpets need to be vacuumed a minimum of three times a week, although it is preferable to vacuum daily in order to make sure that your carpet remains in the best condition.

Should your carpet suffer a spill or spot then it is important to act as quickly as possible. Use an absorbent cloth and dilute the spill using water. Wool is absorbent and so it is important not to use too much water. For best results use a solution which is three parts water to one part vinegar. This slightly acidic solution will not harm your carpet, but it will help to dilute the stain and at the same time will help to keep the wool soft.

Never scrub a stain on a wool carpet as this will almost certainly break down the fibres, which will result in your carpet becoming fuzzy. Never become too eager to use too much liquid as over-wetting a wool carpet can result in discoloration, causing a yellow or brown tinge to appear.

Always lift spots and stains immediately using a ph neutral cleaning solution or a vinegar and water mixture. Vacuum your wool carpet at least every day or every other day and it is important to make sure that once a year, or at least every 18 months, you use a professional carpet cleaner who is able to use methods, which are safe for cleaning wool carpets.

This should involve any of the several wool safe dry cleaning methods. By using a professional dry cleaner, you will help to ensure the longevity of your carpet, and guard against any possible damage to the fibres and unnecessary wetting, which could also cause discoloration.

Wool carpets are the first choice for many homes, at least for those who can afford the expense. Naturally resistant to fire, they are not only extremely comfortable and attractive but also add a significant level of safety. Able to absorb a tremendous amount of moisture they can help to keep the humidity in your home down to a minimum. Wool will almost certainly outlive any synthetic carpet material, and if cared for properly will continue to look and feel in an excellent condition for many, many years.

However, in order to achieve this longevity it is important to follow the above advice for cleaning and caring for your wool carpet. Remember, never use traditional carpet cleaning detergents, never over-wet your carpet, and never scrub it. With regular vacuum cleaning, and annual dry-cleaning, your wool carpet should prove to be the best value for money.

Cleaning wool carpets is neither simple nor as quick as for most other types of carpet, but if done properly your wool carpet will reward the care and attention you give it with many years of faithful and hardwearing service. They are both beautiful and functional.
